From Mummies to Masterpieces: Deasa Turner’s Transformative Journey in Contemporary Art

by JON STOJAN

Renowned artist Deasa Turner has recently captivated a new audience with her thought-provoking solo exhibition, “Glitter Glitter Bang Bang,” held at Taylor Fine Art in the Culver City Arts District. With a diverse background spanning Houston, San Francisco, New York City, Paris, and the UK, she has been able to bring her life experience to the forefront of creative art in the heart of Los Angeles.

Artistic Journey:

Turner’s artistic journey traces back to her childhood, where her creative spirit blossomed through crafting costumes, decorations, props, and sets for school performances. While studying in the US and abroad, she immersed herself in classes that embraced theatrical and creative arts. A pivotal moment led her to The Sorbonne in Paris, marking a transition from an active modeling career to dedicated art studies in her 30s.

“I cannot recall the specific moment or age at which I first picked up a pencil or brush, but I feel like I have been creating art since I was a child,” says Turner, reflecting on her lifelong connection to art.

Transmogrification Technique:

Turner’s art is a fusion of levity, gravity, and depravity extracted from common objects, both past and present. Her unique technique, which she labels “transmogrification,” involves painting, burning, “drowning,” and wrapping objects. Each piece tells a narrative, sometimes existing solely in her imagination.

The artist’s refusal to adhere to conventional boundaries is evident in her mummification of objects, symbolizing the diverse ways humanity is wrapped up in the cycles of life. The urban landscape serves as her inspiration, with cities depicted as vibrant playgrounds adorned with traffic cones, graffiti, theater, and more.

Glitter Glitter Bang Bang:

The solo exhibition at Taylor Fine Art, running from December 2nd to December 30th, 2023, offered a captivating glimpse into Turner’s world. The opening night on December 9th, from 7 to 10 PM, welcomed art enthusiasts to experience the urban vibrancy of her creations.

“Glitter Glitter Bang Bang” delves into the complexities of modern life, using mummies as symbolic portraits of humanity. Turner’s commentary on the glamorization of guns, consumerism, and societal norms challenges viewers to contemplate their own existence in the complex web of contemporary culture.

Exploration of Humanity:

Turner’s powerful statement, “My mummies are portraits of humanity. We are all wrapped up, wound in our many ways of being in our world,” underscores her commitment to exploring the multifaceted aspects of human identity. The exhibition raises questions about societal norms, and the need for a collective shift in consciousness.

Price Range and Representation:

While Turner leaves the pricing of her artwork to the gallerists, her pieces typically range from $500 to $7,500 USD. Currently represented by Taylor Fine Art in Culver City and Hooks-Epstein Galleries in Houston, she continues to bring her unique life experiences to the contemporary art scene.

Deasa Turner’s artistic journey and the “Glitter Glitter Bang Bang” exhibition invite audiences to reflect on the intricate tapestry of modern life. She welcomes everyone to join her on her journey as she transforms ordinary objects into profound reflections on humanity, encouraging viewers to question, contemplate, and engage with the complexities of our world.
